A groundbreaking bill called the Family And Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act was introduced today. The purpose of the FAMILY Act is to create the first-ever national paid family and medical leave insurance program. Only 12 percent of private sector workers have employer-provided paid family leave; just 50 percent of new mothers take even a few paid days off after giving birth; millions of Americans simply cannot afford to take unpaid leave.Other countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) started providing paid maternity leave more than 100 years ago.
